The small town of Muddy River has big dreams, and one of the big ones is winning the 100-year-old rivalry with fellow small town Edenfield. Muddy River is nowhere near a river and isn't (usually) muddy. Edenfield isn't Eden or located in a field. But this rivalry is about to get out of hand and be settled in a tragic manner.
This involves several subplots: a 'Romeo-and-Juliet' type romance between two people of the opposing towns, a battle-weary sheriff negotiating with his fellow battle-weary sheriff of the other town, the arrogant mayors and town officials, how children grow up with learned prejudices, and how 'sophisticated' people believe they are, especially when they aren't. Very Shakespearean in the spirit of Romeo and Juliet, Richard III and King Lear.
