Cowgirl/Cheerleader Sarah (Halloween Pics Part I)

We were at the Dollar Store earlier and she fell in love with the pink cowgirl hat. When we got home, she grabbed her stuffed horse and that was pretty much that. She had a princess costume that her sister had outgrown, but I think she likes this better.

And that's a Virginia Tech little cheerleader outfit she's wearing. It's the closest thing she's got to anything 'western' to wear, and she's wearing the colors of her mama's alma mater!

One of the strangest books I've ever read...(book review)

The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen.

I found it in Barnes and Noble on the clearance shelf. The first thing I noticed was that the book was completely square, not rectangular like most other books. It looked interesting at a first glance, with pictures and captions in the margins. I went ahead and bought it, at less than $7. The narrator is Tecumseh Sparrow (T.S. Spivet), a 12-year-old cartography genius who lives with his parents and sister in rural Montana. His father is a quiet rancher; his mother a scientist is search of a rare and exotic beetle.

A call from the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. changes his life. He's offered a fellowship, although the museum director has no idea that T.S. is only 12 years old. T.S. decides to leave his family and go cross-country to D.C. So starts his very strange trip.

The first part of the book introduces his family: practically-minded sister Gracie, silent Tecumseh Elijah Spivet, and distracted Dr. Clair (his mother...he only refers her to Dr. Clair, not 'Mother'). We find out that T.S.'s brother Layton has recently died in a shooting accident, but no one really mentions Layton, except T.S. After the Smithsonian call, T.S. leaves on a train heading East.

The middle part of the book focuses on T.S.'s great-great grandmother, Emma Osterville. Dr. Clair kept a notebook about her illustrious ancestor: Emma was one of the first female geologists in the country. Why did such a strong-willed, practical woman give up everything to marry a rancher in the wilds of Montana?

It's a strange tale-within-a-tale, a definite mirror to T.S.'s journey in the opposite direction. There's one problem: we (the readers) never know the reason. Emma's story just ends on that vague note with no conclusion. Of course, Emma's tale lasts long enough to occupy T.S. during the entire cross-country trip (wormhole effect?)

The last part of the book has T.S. involved with a conspiracy group in Washington D.C., but that storyline doesn't go anywhere, either, and is never resolved. The story ends on a rather abrupt note (won't give it away, but my reaction was, "That's IT?!"), as if the book just runs out of time.

I actually enjoyed the illustrations and the footnotes in the margins. T.S. manages to include all sorts of trivia and pieces of information in those drawings. If footnotes drive you crazy, it can be a real distraction. Some of them are directly related to the story, but most are not. It's a fascinating look into T.S.'s mind; a 12-year-old genius whose thoughts are random, yet organized at the same time.

I enjoyed some parts of this book, but others seemed to drag out, and you have to suspend a lot of disbelief while reading this. Out of five stars, I'd give this book about a two and a half.

Yes, those last two are two SEPARATE photos of my girls when they were babies. Many assume those are both of Christina or both of Sarah. Michael did a lot of funny faces when he was a baby.

An Unexpected Blast from the Past

Not long ago, I carted a lot of old books to the used bookstore. I was hoping to get some money back, or at least some store credit, for them. Unfortunately, they couldn't take them, and I ended up donating them.

This was placed in my book bin, even though it wasn't mine. Apparently, someone tried to trade this in and couldn't, and the bookseller had thought it was mine:

French_record_set1

That's a box of "French: Level One" practice record sets. Yes, RECORD, as in 33 1/3 RPM. 14 Longplay microgroove, hi-fi records, copyright 1960. There were only 6 of the 14 in the box:

French_records2

At the bottom there's a strip titled, "Care of the Record".

1. Store in this protective sleeve, to avoid scratching and dirt.

2. Handle this record by the edges and center only.

3. Use a microgroove needle only. Keep it clean, and have it checked occasionally to be sure that it is not too badly worn.

4. Keep record away from heat. Do not lay it in direct sun or on a radiator. (on a radiator?)

5. Always store records upright (not flat)

6. Play manually at 33 1/3 RPM.

And this is Practice Record Side A of Unit 8:

Most of my students wouldn't know what to do with this. In fact, they'd think it was a weird, oversized CD or a frisbee. Considering this set is 41 years old, it's in pretty good shape. I remember records like this, though I'm not going to tell you just how old I am.

The Technological Gods Hate Me, Part II

I swear, whatever Gods are in charge of laptops and databases, USB ports and CD/DVD drives are after me with a vengeance. I'm still wondering what I did to tick 'em off. Yeah, my laptop hard drive decided to die on me, just like that. Hubs spent the entire day this past Sunday trying to a)figure out what's going on b)retrieve stuff from the dead hard drive and c)make the laptop functional again.

Laptop is kinda functional. I've got internet access again, and I've spent most of this week re-installing and reorganizing everything I had. Most of my stuff is backed up on an external hard drive (esp. my e-book stuff and art), but the Tech Gods declared, "Uh-uh."

The laptop refuses to ackowledge the USB ports. Can't use my mouse, can't plug in the external hard drive. I had to plug it into Hubs' desktop, download stuff onto CD-R and re-install it that way (at least my CD/DVD drive works). I've tried unplugging the computer and restarting it...Hubs insists it isn't the USB port drivers or whatnot. >.< It won't acknowledge the SD card from my digital camera, either. So I've got to go the CD-R download route again...which is do-able, just a real pain.

I'll be back-posting art and writing and other things, once I get everything downloaded, processed, etc. in between episodes of real-life, of course.

I keep telling myself this is a challenge to improve on my patience. I hope.
