An Afternoon at the Crack'd Pot
This past Christmas, my husband got me a $50 gift card to The Crack'd Pot . It's a paint-your-own-pottery place just down the road from our house. He thought I would enjoy taking Sarah there, since we both love to paint.
Yesterday, we finally managed to get by the shop. It's a roomy studio, with items on the shelves. Tina (the owner), showed us the ropes. Sarah selected a ceramic bug car and I found a Asian doll-princess piggy bank. We were allowed to choose three colors at a time, so our palettes wouldn't be so crowded. Sarah chose blue, yellow and tan for her little car. I painted the doll's kimono mulberry purple and her hair, a rich black. Sarah chose heart stickers and placed them all over her car; after she painted over them, Tina removed them to reveal the pattern.
Stickers and stencils...I painted a bamboo on the dolls dress and added a bow for her hair. I felt like I was four years old again and Sarah definitely enjoyed slathering paint all over the car.
It takes three days to fire the ceramics in the kiln (eighteen hours in the kiln, eighteen hours cool-down time), so we'll have to wait until Thursday or Friday until we can pick up the finished products.
I'll definitely come back, for Tuesdays are 'Mom and Me' days, and Thursdays are 'Dad and Me' days (10% off both days) and Friday nights are 'Moms Night'.
When our ceramics are done, I'll post pictures of our art here. Stay tuned!

Yesterday, Sarah and I were at an Autism Society Mom's Support Group. It was at Panera Bread at Northlake Mall. She gave me words and I drew them so she knew what they looked like. A teachable moment for my 3 year old. Little cartoon-like sketches with my mechanical pencil. You can do art anywhere.

These were taken at Earthbound in Concord Mills Mall. My younger daughter posing in the mirror. She's a real ham...someone give her an Oscar (or a BAFTA) please!

Making Art from "The Legacy of the Triple Lotus" (Nanowrimo 2011)
Here is the first piece of art based on my WIP "The Legacy of the Triple Lotus". The beginning part of the novel is set in Shinwa, a land based on Ancient China. Here is a temple, part of the Bell Temple complex in the Tong Mountains. Read the excerpt here.

I used many references for this painting, including Rob Alexander's How to Draw and Paint Fantasy Architecture and John Chinnery's Treasures of China: The Glories of the Kingdom of the Dragon.
My younger daughter decided to 'help' me with the painting. (This was while I was photographing it, and Sarah decided to pick up a dry brush and pretend to paint).

Thoughts on my Daughter's Birthday...
It sounds pretty cliche, but I look at my kids and I think, Time goes way too fast. I remember Sarah as a newborn, and when she learned to crawl and walk. I remember when she first said "Mama" and "Dada". I remember the fear that went through me and hoping that she would be "normal". Sarah was an "Oops!" baby in every sense of the word. I found out I was having her when I was 16 weeks pregnant, sick with pneumonia in the hospital, and terrified of how the rheumatoid arthritis meds I was taking at the time would affect her.
I think my obstetrician nearly fainted when he found out. Doctors usually give that particular med to cancer patients, to suppress their immune system for chemotherapy. My rheumatologist was just baffled...pregnancy just WAS NOT POSSIBLE with this med.
Like I said, major OOPS!
But life has a funny way of balancing things out in the end, I think.
Sarah loves Legos, Wedgits and building blocks. She watches the Wiggles and Thomas the Train. Whenever we go to the toy store, she goes straight for the cars and trucks and ignores the dolls. She has no fear of the big slide on the playground and could spend hours in the sandbox if I let her. She shows her dad's aptitude for building and solving puzzles, but carries around a stuffed yellow lab puppy dog. Her favorite word is the toddler favorite, "No!" Figures. But I don't mind. Her two older siblings are non-verbal autistic, so every new word she says is an exciting gift.
Happy birthday, Sarah. Mum loves you.
