New Art: "Kemeti Archives" (From upcoming e-book "Shadow of the Goddess")

The Kemeti are loosely based on the ancient Egyptian and Mayan civilizations, as evidenced by their architecture. They are mentioned in the short story "Wood" in "Five Elemental Dragons: Cycle One" as neighbors of the Shinwai. The Kemeti feature heavily in the sequel to the "Five Elemental Dragons" Cycles, "Shadow of the Goddess" (Summer 2012).

Free PDF download of sample chapter: Tales of the Elemental Dragons (Huo, Fire)

In celebration of Chinese New Year, readers can get a glimpse of my newest short story anthology, Tales of the Elemental Dragons. In Chinese cosmology, there are five elements (as opposed to four in Western myth): earth, metal, fire, wood and water. This anthology will include ten stories, two for each element. These stories are interconnected, and serve as an introduction to my upcoming fantasy series set in a land like ancient China.

The link is here: http://writermum1.yolasite.com/pdfs-of-novels.php

Once the set of ten is complete (hopefully by Wednesday) and on Smashwords.com, I'll announce it on my blogs (Eighth Shot of Espresso, I Gotta Write! and the IGW Facebook page, plus my Asian-inspired blog, The Brocade Box). The short story collection will be *free* to download for 2 weeks, then after that time, it will cost $1.00 to download.

In the meantime, enjoy this sample chapter!

Admin Post: New art e-book now available from Smashwords.com

"Women in Color" celebrates women in paint, pen, and pastel. I collected some of my favorite paintings and drawings of strong heroines. Soldiers, mothers, dancers...girls can grow up to be anyone they want, no matter what color, creed or race they are. Each piece of artwork is accompanied by a short commentary outlining the creative processes behind it.

Here's the link: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/109808 and it's $1.25 to download.

I made it through Nanowrimo 2011!!

Winner_180_180_white

As of this morning, my Nanowrimo word count is 51,705 words, and the story isn't finished yet. It looks like it might end up a LOT longer than I was expecting. For something that was a hodgepodge of scenes and stuff, it's starting to gell into an actual plot (gasp!). I've also gotten back into the habit of writing every day, even if it's just jotting a few notes or character quirks.

Now that to pressure of making 50K words before November 30 is off, I can return to some of my projects I put on hold to do this. My newest e-book "Women in Color" is planned for the first week of December, with art products on Zazzle in time for Christmas. I also have a few short stories and fanfic that I need to get back to sometime...leaving plots on indefinite cliffhanger makes for unhappy readers indeed.

Back to work...and stay tuned for more writing and art posts to come!

Creativity can save your sanity...

This past week has been somewhat of a nightmare, for many reasons. Not only for personal reasons, but technological too. We had a modem problem that made accessing the Internet difficult. Since our Internet and main phone line were bundled, we lost main phone service too (thank goodness for working cell phones!). Now that the technological problems are straightened out, I've had to play catch up on a lot of things.

On the good side, I used the time to work on creative projects. I finished my second short story/poetry collection in time for Halloween, and started to put together a collection of my art. Spent more time with the kids and generally tried not to go insane. I finally got rid of a lot of clutter around the house...Goodwill and the used bookstore received plenty of donations.

When times are tough and people question your relative sanity (literally, figurative or otherwise), writing and art are good outlets for sadness and frustration. Put those words on the page, draw those images, mix those colors and throw them on the canvas. A slow boil can make a tasty spaghetti sauce or a great cup of tea. A quick flash can spark more ideas down the road. Get those emotions out there before it has a chance to fester into a gaping emotional wound.

This past week has been a lesson in patience and self-preservation. I can say this, though: creative work has been (and continue to be) a way for me to cope when my world's turned upside down.

Admin Post: New e-book now available from Scribd.com

My second e-book of short stories and poetry, "From the Dark Side of Shadow" is now available from Scribd.com!

Here's the link: http://www.scribd.com/doc/66695780/From-the-Dark-Side-of-Shadow

The heart is capable of great kindness, but also of great cruelty. How far are you willing to go to get what you want? This collection of short stories and poetry explores the darker side of human nature. "The Final Cut" focuses on a hair stylist who has greater ambitions than her current employment. A girl enters a mathematical world in "Math Spells". Is "The Toy Room" really haunted?

Check out this collection of dark tales on Scribd.
